Jens Nielsen is the CEO of BioInnovation Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark and Professor of Systems Biology at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg,
Join us for an inspiring webinar lunch the 7th of February in KA together with Raphael Ferreira, a PhD student at the Systems & Synthetic biology Department at Chalmers. Raphael's work focuses mainly on developing novel CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tools for metabolic engineering purposes and he recently returned from a research visit at MIT, where CRISPR technologies was applied on cancer research.

Stefan Hohmann is Head of the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University (Sweden). He studied biology and microbiology at the Technische Universitat Darmstadt (Germany), where he received his PhD in 1987 and became professor in 1993. Together with genomic resequencing and systems biology tools we also study new mechanisms of stress and regulation.

We have also recently begun collaborating with Jens Nielsen's group at the Systems Biology department at Chalmers, trying to better quantify biological and technical variation in scRNA data. Since 2018, I am the Vice-Dean for Research and Research Infrastructures at Faculty of Science , University of Gothenburg. Computational tools and techniques for systems and data analysis are key to gaining better understanding of processes and products as well as to optimize their performance. This holds true regardless of the applications being of technical or biological character since on a systems level they can be modeled and analyzed using general mathematical techniques. Systems and synthetic biology are an emerging scientific fields that aim at system level understanding and synthesis of biological processes. This is of crucial importance in both the biotech, pharmaceutical, and bioengineering industry. Systems and Synthetic Biology at Chalmers University of Technology has 71 repositories available. We argue that the systems biology approach will bring valuable contributions to our understanding of regulations and mechanisms of the complex cell death pathways. Programmed cell death (PCD) (including apoptosis) is an essential process, and many human diseases of high prevalence such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer are associated with deregulations in the cell death pathways.
